The Volcanic Eruption Emergency Project (VEEP) strengthened ongoing forestry rehabilitation efforts with the official handover of specialised forestry equipment to support operations in volcano-affected communities across Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
The handover ceremony, held in August 2024, formed part of the Government’s broader recovery and resilience programme following the April 2021 eruptions of La Soufrière volcano. Through this initiative, VEEP continues to support critical government agencies tasked with environmental restoration, hazard management, and disaster recovery operations.
The equipment package, valued at approximately EC$346,046.99, included chainsaws, protective helmets, winches, axes, fuel containers, safety gear, and other field tools necessary for forestry operations in difficult terrain. The resources are expected to significantly improve the efficiency and safety of Forestry Department personnel working in northern communities impacted by volcanic ash, fallen debris, and environmental degradation.
Officials noted that the equipment would assist with land clearing, reforestation support, vegetation management, and the rehabilitation of damaged forested areas. The initiative also reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional capacity and ensure frontline agencies are adequately equipped to respond to future emergencies and environmental challenges.
Since its launch, VEEP has implemented several initiatives aimed at restoring livelihoods, rehabilitating infrastructure, and building long-term resilience in communities affected by the volcanic eruptions. Forestry rehabilitation remains an important component of these efforts as healthy ecosystems continue to play a critical role in environmental protection, watershed management, and disaster risk reduction.
The handover demonstrates the project’s continued commitment to supporting sustainable recovery and strengthening national preparedness systems throughout Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
