The Volcanic Eruption Emergency Project (VEEP) continued its support for agricultural recovery with the official handover of two newly constructed small ruminant pens at the Rabacca Livestock Breeding and Multiplication Centre in September 2024.

The project forms part of ongoing efforts to rebuild and strengthen Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ agricultural sector following the devastating impacts of the 2021 eruption of La Soufrière volcano. Livestock farmers in several northern communities were significantly affected by ashfall, displacement, and disruptions to agricultural production and breeding activities.

Constructed at a cost of approximately EC$944,107.92, the facilities are expected to improve breeding capacity, livestock management, and animal care services within the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Transformation. The upgraded infrastructure will also support long-term food security initiatives and contribute to the development of a more resilient livestock sector.

During the handover ceremony, officials highlighted the importance of investing in modern agricultural infrastructure capable of supporting recovery while improving preparedness for future environmental and climate-related challenges. The facilities are designed to enhance operational efficiency at the Rabacca Livestock Breeding and Multiplication Centre while supporting farmers through improved access to quality breeding stock and livestock development services.

The initiative reflects VEEP’s ongoing commitment to supporting recovery and resilience-building efforts across key sectors impacted by the volcanic eruptions. Through strategic collaboration with government ministries and technical agencies, the project continues to implement initiatives focused on infrastructure rehabilitation, livelihood restoration, and sustainable national development.

The completion of the small ruminant pens marks another important milestone in the country’s agricultural recovery process and demonstrates continued investment in strengthening food production systems throughout Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
